Nilsmark named Captain of The 2007 European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team

The European Solheim Cup Committee and the SGF today announced the appointment of Catrin Nilsmark as the Captain of The 2007 European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team.

The 38-year-old from Gothenburg in Sweden captained the European Solheim Cup Team to victory at Barsebäck G&CC in Sweden in 2003 and led the team in the 2005 matches at Crooked Stick GC in Indiana.

She made five appearances in The Solheim Cup as a player and was instrumental in Europe’s victories in 1992 at Dalmahoy GC and at Loch Lomond in 2000. In 1992, she holed the winning putt in Europe’s first victory.

Nilsmark, who has won two tournaments in a 17-year career, was delighted to accept the invitation to lead some of the most talented young female golfers in Europe.

"I am very honoured to be selected the Captain for the PING Junior Solheim Cup in Sweden 2007 and I hope that my experiences of playing in The Solheim Cup and being the Captain for the last two competitions will help the juniors to win their matches against the US Team,” said Nilsmark.

"Many of the previous PING Junior Solheim Cup players are today professional stars and role models and it is great to see their development. The PING Junior Solheim Cup provides the juniors with a wonderful opportunity to compete against each other at an elite level and it gives them vital experience for their future careers."

Alexandra Armas, executive director of the LET said of Nilsmark’s appointment:

“I’m thrilled that Catrin will captain The 2007 European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team as she is a wonderful ambassador and a great role model.

“As a two-time Captain of The Solheim Cup she brings enormous experience and I am sure she will be a very popular and inspirational leader to the junior team.”

John A. Solheim, Chairman and CEO of PING, added: “The Solheim Family is very excited with the choice of Catrin Nilsmark as the Captain of The 2007 PING Junior Solheim Cup Team.

"As the Captain of The 2003 and 2005 European Solheim Cup Teams as well as a five-time competitor in the event she will bring a lot of experience and knowledge that she will be able to share with the Junior players. The European squad is in very good hands."

The fourth PING Junior Solheim Cup, which features the 12 best female junior golfers (aged from 13-18) from Europe competing against the top 12 American girls, will take place at Båstad GK, Sweden, on September 11-12, 2007. The event immediately precedes The 2007 Solheim Cup at nearby Halmstad Golfklubb, from September 14-16, 2007.

The US Team won the inaugural junior competition at Oak Ridge Country Club in Minnesota in 2002 and European victory followed at Bokskogens GK in Sweden in 2003.

The US Team reclaimed the trophy at The Bridgewater Club in Indianapolis in 2005 continuing the growing trend of the Cup being won by the team on its home soil.

Notes to editors:

To be eligible to play in the European Team a player must be a European citizen and must not have reached their 18th birthday prior to January 1st 2007.

The European team will consist of the seven leading players from the PING Junior Solheim Cup European rankings and the Team Captain and committee will select the remaining five girls from member federations of the EGA.

Nilsmark’s appointment completes a formidable European Team with Helen Alfredsson and Marie-Laure de Lorenzi captain and vice captain respectively of The 2007 Solheim Cup Team who will be trying to ensure the two trophies are regained by Europe as they were in 2003.
