Padraigs tips til amatører (utstyr o.l.)

My Tips for AmateursShare
Why you should have softer shafts, avoid closed faces and get lofts and lies checked.
USE SOFTER SHAFTS
You'll strike the ball better and hit it further, People generally go to stiffer to nullify dispersion.
The less the shaft is kicking the more consistent it'll be through impact.
I use 6.5 Rifle shafts and I used to use 7.2. I tried the much softer, more flexible 5.5 and I hit them gloriously, but I was advised I shouldn't use them. Basically, what they were saying is that the results on the monitor pointed to inconsistency in dispersion, distance and accuracy. But I got a great flight.
Put it like this, 99 per cent of golfers would hit the ball better and further with more flex in their shafts.
ADD LOFT
I'd say 99 per cent of amateurs also have too little loft on their driver. To have below 10 degrees then you need to have the clubhead speed of a pro.
If you have 105mph clubhead speed and 10 degrees of loft and you're hitting it too high, well it's your swing that's out, not the loft.
GET PGA PRO ADVICE
A lot of drivers with closed faces make poor players hit the ball straighter when they first use the club.
If the first shot is long and left then people buy it because it didn't slice.
Also, some irons are more upright because that encourages players to hit a draw, which is what most amateurs want.
Wilson don't do that and I think that's partly down to me. The Wilson Smooth driver is for a better player who wants a club that is close to neutral at address.
They're not setting them up to suit that one first shot. They're setting them up so that these are actually clubs you can play with.
If you're buying clubs, you must talk to a PGA pro and get some solid advice and the good thing is that there are qualified pros even in the high street these days.
AVOID CLOSED FACES
Adjustable drivers are popular, but a word of warning. Don't think that setting it with the face closed will end your slicing worries.
All that'll happen is when you first use it, you'll hook the ball, but as soon as you get used to it, you'll end up doing what you used to do, only 10 times worse.
You're better off having a driver that is close to neutral and trying to use your golf swing to make adjustments.
Equipment can help to cure a fault, but that's only short term. To get a long-term cure, you need to work on your swing.
HAVE YOUR CLUBS CHECKED
You should never buy a set of clubs where you can't go back in six months and have the lofts and lies checked. An 'after-sales' service is very important.
The one thing I always say to people is that they should get the lies and lofts on their clubs checked regularly.
If they travel with them of just wear and tear, one or two of the clubs will move and that can make them distinctly different.
The most important thing with a set of clubs is that they are in sync with each other.
Talk soon,
Padraig.
