‘ECO-FRIENDLY' COSTA NAVARINO NOMINATED FOR THREE
TOP AWARDS
Costa Navarino has seen its environmental credentials recognised with a
nomination for the title of ‘world's best eco-friendly golf facility', in the
2020 World Golf Awards™.
What's more, the prime, sustainable destination in the Mediterranean is also up
for two more awards, including the title of ‘Europe's best golf venue'.
Located in the Greek region of Messinia, in the south-west Peloponnese, Costa
Navarino opened in 2010 with a strong commitment to environmental and social
responsibility, aiming to be a sustainable tourism development in harmony both
with the natural environment and the local communities of Messinia.
It continues to adhere to strict management guidelines, with environmental
protection remaining a top priority, from construction through to operation. The
building footprint at Costa Navarino will always be less than half of the
percentage permitted, while more than 90 per cent of the total land area will be
dedicated to indigenous and planted greenery.
The facilities at Navarino Dunes, the first area in Costa Navarino, received
certification for the environmental management system according to ISO 14001,
while the destination is unusual in that it produces its own annual
sustainability report.
Costa Navarino's commitment to its natural environment was illustrated further
last year, with the opening of an earth-sheltered clubhouse on its Robert Trent
Jones Jnr-designed
Bay Course. The 2,000m2 uniquely designed building blends harmoniously into
the natural landscape and is only clearly visible when playing the closing hole.
Designed by Athens-based AETER Architects - with interiors by London's MKV
Design - the clubhouse affords stunning vistas across the course to the historic
Bay of Navarino and features planted roofs, which will, ultimately, include a
total of 27,500 plants and trees, both around the clubhouse and on its roof, as
well as materials and systems that maximise the building's energy efficiency.
Such has been the reception given to the clubhouse that it, too, has been
nominated in the World Golf Awards, in the category of ‘world's best clubhouse',
demonstrating Costa Navarino's determination to remain a unique destination
without sacrificing its environmentally-conscious ethos.
A former IAGTO ‘European golf resort of the year', Costa Navarino's world-class
golf experience currently comprises two 18-hole signature courses: the Bernhard
Langer and EGD-designed
Dunes Course, set in diverse natural scenery with spectacular sea and river
views, takes its name from the tall dunes that separate several holes from a
golden beach, while the Bay Course offers panoramic sea and mountain views, with
two holes playing along the historic Bay of Navarino.
Costa Navarino is located in one of the most unspoiled and breathtaking seaside
Mediterranean landscapes, in an area which has been shaped by 4,500 years of
history. It comprises several distinct sites featuring five-star deluxe hotels,
luxury private residences, conference facilities, spa and thalassotherapy
centres, and signature golf courses, as well as a wide range of unique
year-round activities for adults and children.
The World Golf Awards - part of World Travel Awards™ - serves to celebrate and
reward excellence in golf tourism through its annual awards programme. Its
seventh annual World Golf Awards gala ceremony will be held at Park Hyatt Dubai,
on October 29, 2020.
